I have finished my project and now I am waiting to get the remainder of the footage from my mentor. We used his GoPro for the filming and taking pictures of what we was doing because I did not have a camera to film with. There is a video of me shooting the toʻau and that is basically what I am waiting on. Once I get that it will prove that I tried my best even though the conditions were horrible for diving. But I am finished with my project and I am pretty happy about that. Now all I have to do is put everything together to finally complete the longest project I think that I have ever worked on.
I finished my project over this past weekend but I still could not go diving for rois and toʻaus because of the same problem like my last blog. The weather was horrible! The ocean had a high surf advisory swell that caused the oceans to be murky and have strong currents and high seas so we could not get past where the waves break and that is where we were supposed to go for dive. It was also extremely windy which meant that bringing our float into the water would have held us back a lot! So we ended up cleaning the reef just a little bit more this time targeting more fishing supplies.
Over this past weekend I was at my mentors house and the weather conditions sucked! It was windy and choppy and the current was really strong so it was not good for diving so my mentor told me lets not dive but lets stick to getting rid of the local threats and pick up the rubbish. So thats what we did but we just so happened to come across a roi and a toʻau. Which we shot and that is the two fish at the bottom left side of the picture below.
This past weekend on Saturday I went to my mentors house to start my actual project and catch fish. The laying net part did not work as expected because there was another net right next to the net that we played out. We had not realized this until the sun came up and we seen their floaters in the water. I was really let down but that same day we went diving and we got some tau and roi and Micah also got a tako. It was really fun and I believe that I have completed my project.
Today I will be going to Micah Hees house in order to start my project. We will first be doing a small reef clean up so we will lay a net out tonight in order to do this. We hope to catch some Toaus and will stay up through the night checking on the net for native fish in which we will release these fishes. I am really excited to see what we will catch and how much of it we will.
Today I made my decision final. I will be doing this project with the help of Micah Hee and the place I will be focusing on to get rid of fish is the Ahupuaʻa of Hauʻula as well as disposing of fish in other places on Oʻahu. I need to make sure that I live up to my word of going to Micahs house and actually doing the project by showing initiative and perseverance. He has told me where there're a lot of invasive fish such as Roi and Toau and that is where we will be going. I have also found a camera to record with from my brother and I will be taking it in and out of the water.
